The Odyssey

In medias res:  the literary and artistic narrative technique of relating a story from the midpoint, rather than the beginning. In an in medias res narrative, the story opens with dramatic action rather than exposition setting up the characters and situation.

Invocation: a form of prayer invoking God's presence.

Flashback(倒敘): in literature and dramatic media, an interjected scene that takes the narrative back in time from the current point.

* Homer's Iliad has few flashbacks, although it opens in the thick of the Trojan War.

Foreshadowing(伏筆): a literary device by which an author hints what is to come.It is used to avoid disappointment, and sometimes used to arouse readers.

Jove=Zeus(Greek)=Jupiter(Roman)

*Jupiter is the biggest planet in the Solar System so  it was named after Zeus.

Europa→Europe

Europa was a beautiful Phoenicia princess. She was abducted by Zeus in the form of a white bull. She was taken to Crete, where is Europe nowadays.

Argus(百眼巨人)and peacock: Argus was Hera's servant. He had one hundred eyes. When he slept, only a few of the eyes would sleep at a time: there were always eyes still awake. Hera's defining task for Argus was to guard the white heifer Io from Zeus, keeping her chained to the sacred olive tree at the Argive Heraion. Io was one of the many nymphs Zeus was coupling with. To free Io, Zeus asked Hermes to killed Argus. Hermes disguised as a shepherd, put all of Argus's eyes asleep with spoken charms and killed him. Hera was sad for Argus's death. She put all his eyes on peacock and sent a gadfly to torment Io.

Prometheus: one of the Titan gods. He was chained on the cliff of Mt. Caucasus as a punishment because he stole fire for humankind. Everyday, his liver was eaten by vulture and then a new liver grew out. When Io was in the form of heifer and tormented by the gadfly, she fled to Mt. Caucasus and met Prometheus.

Uranus: the primal Greek god personifying the sky.He was the husband of Gaia, Mother Earth. Uranus and Gaia were the parents of the first generation of Titans, and the ancestors of most of the Greek gods. Uranus ate his sons and daughters because he was afraid that thay would get his throne. When Zeus was born, Gaia hid him in the world of mortals. After Zeus grew up, he cut Uranus's abdomen and released the other children.

Salome was the daughter of Herod II and Herodias. According to Mark 6:21-29 Salome danced before Herod and Herodias at the occasion of his birthday, and in doing so gave her mother the opportunity to obtain the head of John the Baptist.
